Abstract Combat
Abstract Combat is a turn-based action system for those who are unable to partake in combat (for whatever reason) but still want to play a warrior archetyped character by appealing to Mr Chess, a powerful and tricksy Archfey.
Through his Favours (available to non-combat Players), he can grant the ability to utilise Abstract Combat in a Quest. These Favours must be presented to Crew at least 2 hours before the Quest is due to take place, to give them ample time to prep the encounter accordingly.
Once on the mission, Mr Chess will appear in his usual attire and act as a “Dungeon Master” for the encounter, setting the scene diegetically; e.g. “As you enter the glade, you look down and see a network of lines on the ground. Like a grid. You also realise that none of you can move. At least not yet…”. Mr Chess will then talk those on the encounter through the mechanics, allowing the players to move and act on their turns.
There will be some changes to combat mechanics that may vary between encounters, but always:
- Players may strike enemies with their melee weapons, but they cannot use any projectile weapon props (i.e. arrows, bean bags)
- Players can still utilise their archery skills and ranged magic, but will state their intent and Mr Chess will decide on the outcome
- Enemies and monsters will mime attacking on these encounters but will not make physical contact
Once the encounter is finished, regular roleplay can resume, and Quest rewards will be given out as normal.
